SERVING THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES THROUGH MTA VIETNAM2009

Still the gem of investors, Vietnam's social-economic situation from the first half of 2007 to the first 9 months of year 2008, has been developing stably with an increased GDP rate of 6.52 (General Statistics Office of Vietnam). The mechanical and engineering industries serving the growing and developing sectors of Vietnam continues to define the country's vision and progress.

The MTA VIETNAM series of events held at Hanoi from 9th - 12th July and Ho Chi Minh City from 3rd - 6th September 2008 attracted over 13,500 trade attendees seeking the latest technologies and application know-how in the world of machines and tools. Across all manufacturing industries, 95% of the relevant 13,500 trade visitors came from the host cities and their surrounding provinces of average 2 hours drive away.

TWO LOCATIONS
SETTING THE ROADMAP

To tap on the high growth potential of industrialisation and to fuel Vietnam's next stage of economic development, two exciting and dedicated trade shows called MTA VIETNAM Ho Chi Minh City Edition and MTA VIETNAM Hanoi Edition are setting the roadmap.

These shows are dedicated because they are well positioned and focused in providing a full spectrum of manufacturing solutions from a large pool of international brands.

The MTA VIETNAM series keeps growing to address Vietnam's needs of progression since 2005 in Ho Chi Minh City. In 2008, the 1st Hanoi edition was launched.

MTA VIETNAM2009 will continue to reach deeper into the heartlands of Vietnam.

"The capital is targeting US$2-3 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) this year, which would place it in the country's top five locations for FDI, according to the municipal Department of Planning and Investment. The city hopes to draw $1.8-2.7 billion from 260 new projects while attracting the remaining capital from 40 existing ones.

Despite the global economic crisis, the city still attracted $180 million in FDI in January, said the department deputy director Nguyen Van Tu, who predicted the figure would reach $400 million this month.

In order to reach the goal, the city needed to perfect its "one-stop shop" policy in business registration and capital construction as well as boost transparency in trade and investment, said Tu. He said the city should consider the policy in other areas like land leasing and transfer to foreign investors. Tu emphasised the need to upgrade IT infrastructure to speed up on-line registration for administrative procedures.

The department is establishing a list of projects seeking domestic and foreign investment to streamline the investment process."

"Hanoi expects to attract 35 foreign investment projects in its industrial parks with a total registered capital of US$150 million and grant approvals to 80 available projects to increase a total additional investment of US$150 million in 2009.According to the municipal Management Board of Industrial Parks and Export Processing Zones, the city's IPs target a year-on-year increase of 15-20% in revenue and an export value of US$1.85 billion."

"In 2008, Hanoi's IPs attracted 22 more projects capitalised at US$75.16 million. Of these projects, the US$18 million Japanese-invested Sumitomo NACCO Materials Handling Vietnam was the largest.Last year also saw a year-on-year increase of 6% in total capital invested in the city's IPs, the management board said. Investors, chiefly from Japan, Taiwan, China and the Republic of Korea, pour their capital into mechanical engineering, industrial production and services."

"The expanded Hanoi is now home to 12 IPs with total area of 2,500 hectares, of which Thang Long, Noi Bai and Sai Dong B IPs are fully occupied."

"The mechanical engineering industry has shifted from a passive to active position, said the deputy head of the Department of Heavy Industry, which is under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, at the workshop 'The Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy and Shipbuilding Industries after Two Year WTO Membership and a Development Prospect' on December 26, 2008, in Hanoi."

"The year 2002 was of great significance to the sector's development because 'The Vietnam Mechanical Industry Development Strategy to 2010 with a Vision to 2020' was approved by the government. Now, six years later and two years after Vietnam became a member of the WTO, the mechanical industry has grown phenomenally. Money has been spent to upgrade equipment in order to increase competitiveness and create new products. And they also employ more laborers, said Mr. Tru."

"By breaking into new markets, domestic businesses have more opportunities to increase exports. The mechanical industry's export revenue exceeded US$1 billion per year for the past few years. In 2008, it stood at US$3 billion, more than twice what it was in 2006. In addition, technology transfer is occurring with greater frequency among businesses operating in the mechanical sector. By operating newer equipment and machinery and learning from foreigners, Vietnamese engineers and workers will be improving their abilities. Some can even now take contracts for large orders. In Vietnam, 6,500-53,000DWT cargo ships, 13,500DWT oil tankers, and 80HP diesel engines are now being made."
